Is a home depot welder powerful enough to make pullup bars?

I wanna make a home gym in my college dorm. The designs are very specific and will require a fair amount of welding. I was at Home depot the other day and saw a number of MIG welders ranging in price range from 250$ to 470$. I don't know anything about owning my own machine, and I want to know if these welders will be powerful enough. Basically If they're strong enough to weld 3 bars together to form pullup bars, they're powerful enough for anything I could possibly need.

Lincoln Electric

AC225S Welder

Lincoln Electric

AC/DC 225/125 Welder

These are two of the welders I saw... Can someone please tell me if any of these are good enough??? Or will I just be wasting my money...Is a home depot welder powerful enough to make pullup bars?
Any welder capable of welding about 1/4" is fine for your needs and will be useful for many other projects as well.

Lincoln welders are very reliable machines.

You may get a better deal from a weld supply shop, Maybe not in the beginning, you may pay a little more for the machine, but your supplies and maintenance tips that you get from the shop will be well worth it
Why would you invest in a welder when you can purchase pipe with threaded ends and threaded connectors to make one heck of a gym! You can design it and even have Home Depot thread the cut pipe to your design. I want to use the same pipe and pipe connectors to make a handrail that had a warehouse look to it. I just did a Yahoo search for Threaded Pipe Pull Up Bar and came up with a lot of sites. Here's one:

I'm all for DIY, but unless you plan on a career in metal working, I'd bet you can buy a used, home gym for less than the cost of the welder.
First of all, the welders that you have noted are SMAW (Stick) welders not MIG. SMAW could be a cheaper route mainly because you don't have to get shielding gases and all of the gages, hoses and bottles involved. If you do find a wire welding machine, go with the option of self shielding wire (also known as inner-shield). This will save on shielding gases (and the gages and hoses etc.) The Lincoln Electric AC/DC 225/125 Welder would be the best bet. With the AC/DC option will allow you to have a larger selection of electrodes and also a higher power source. Also, check out the duty cycle on the machines and select the higher one. The best thing you can do is seek out a local adult school for welding instruction.

Lastly, follow safety rules and get a fire extinguisher. Its amazing how far a spark will travel and how long they stay hot.Is a home depot welder powerful enough to make pullup bars?
Just about any welder you have seen will do the job. What I would worry about more than that is your welding ability. I bought a Lincoln 225 stick welder several years ago only to find out that running a good bead isn't the easiest thing I ever attempted to do. After some extensive reading and a good deal of practice I ended up being able to run a pretty good bead. If I had been attempting to build something like a gym I don't think I could have trusted my welds to support the weight. I could now but back then would have had to wait on my project till my welding got better. Try using threaded pipe and fittings instead. You will probably have your gym finished a lot faster.
