Vodka, Whisky, Gin, Rum %26amp; White Rum
That depends on the tastes of you and your friends. Everyone who has ever decided they needed to set up a home bar has ended up with odds and ends that never get drunk till some major debauchery occurs. Buy a bottle of grenadine, because your girl thinks Tequila Sunrises are great, you'll most likely still have that bottle five years later.
Basic essentials say you should be able to offer someone a drink, some what close to what they desire. This doesn't mean you need to stock a full bar, just that you have whiskey, gin, vodka, and rum, as well as assorted mixers. Even then, you could get away with the just whiskey and vodka most of the time. Even Tequila is only a recent addition.
Drinks are fads. No one is expecting you to be able to whip up every drink under the sun. What are the essensials to have on hand at home, as far as spirits (liquors)?
That's a question that's really impossible to answer. I think I have a pretty well stocked liquor cabinet now, but if someone wanted a Harvey Wallbanger or a melonball they'd be SOL.
Plus, I'm a bourbon freak and a scotch fan, so I probably have 12 bottles of bourbon, and I think 4 bottles of scotch, 2 Irish, a couple rye - in other words, really weighted towards whiskey. But that's what I like.
If someone put a gun to my head and said come up with a bar package that would suit the needs of the most people, at the best price/quality point you can the list would probably look a lot like this:
Whiskey: Jack Daniels. It isn't my favorite by a long shot, but it's a quality whiskey that plays well with others, and everyone knows it.
Vodka: Stolichnaya. Many have come and gone, Stoli got it right from the get go.
Gin: Bombay Sapphire. Again, not my favorite, but a great quality gin with broad appeal, and man does the bottle look gorgeous.
Rum: Another classic in this position; Bacardi Silver.
Tequila: Going with a newbie here. Lunazul. It's made by a Kentucky company called Heaven Hill; they're a huge player in the bourbon world. It's 100% agave, tastes great and the price can't be beat. I'd go with the anejo version.
As far as mixers and cordials; I'd probably want Kahlua, Grand Marnier or Cointreau, a few schnapps, maybe peach and an apple Pucker, a dry vermouth, maybe even round it out with a brandy or cognac.

Depends on your tastes.
In my home you will always find..whisky (NOT burbon) rum (white) vodka, red wine and beer.
That depends what you like. I always have rum, vodka, wine and beer.
