What types of alcohol (not brands) should I get to stock my home bar with?
vodka, rum, triple sec, whiskey, borbon, brandy, tequlia, gin, shnapps(peach) amaretto, blue curcaco(samething as triple sec but it blue adds some color to the drinks)
Gin, vodka, rum, Scotch, bourbon, a couple of bottles of good red and white wine, tequila, brandy, creme de menthe, creme de cocoa, and a nice selection of after-dinner liqueurs.

With that selection, there aren't too many types of drinks that you couldn't make. What types of alcohol (not brands) should I get to stock my home bar with?
you have a good start try adding gin, scotch, mixing liquors like kaluha, baileys isrish cream, midori, coniac, and some mixers
Definately vodka, rum, gin, bourbon, tequila, schnapps are good idea, an assortment of wines....red/white, lots of different mixers pineapple, orange, tomato, etc. also a good one is amaretto liqueor......keep beer on hand too!
Vodka

Bourbon

Scotch

Gin

Rum

Tequila
sounds good but dont forget beer and wine and mixers to go with....
a good bottle of Irish whiskey, a good bottle of single malt scotch, vodka, gin, good south American red wine, good french white wine, some beer and that should be OK
Dont forget some Liqueurs

Also add some Cointreau or Grand Marnier (instead of triple sec). This are needed for top shelf margaritas and also go well in other mixed drinks.

Midori

Tuaca
Tequilla: Patron

Vodka: Grey Goose

Fortified Fruit Wine: Night Train
Gin, bourbon, crem de menth, cognac, brandy, port, baileys, tonic water, agnostura bitters, vermouth, drambuie, chartreuse, cointreau, galliano, tia maria, advocaat, and when youve got them all its party at yours!!!
Red WINE
You have a good start. It all depends on who you are entertaining. Some other essentials for a great selection are:

brandy/cognac

cordials ( like 43, Jager, Kahlua, Bailey's etc.)

tonic water

seltzer water

dry/sweet vermouth

gin

bitters

lime juice

lemon juice

orange juice

pineapple juice

V8

Clamato

frozen strawberries

bar sugar

a single malt scotch (is a whiskey but there are several types of whiskey, too, like bourbon, tennessee, irish, canadian)

cherries

olives

red wine (merlot, zinfandel, sagiovese, cabernet, pinot noir, or a nice meritage)

white wine (chardonay, pinot grigio, white zin, Riesling)

beer (us, german, belgian, etc.)
gin.

and at least one bottle of high quality scotch.
